Class Description:

Have you ever wanted to make your own shoes? Join Stace Fulwiler at Make Smith for a day of sandal making! In this sandal making workshop, you will learn to make your own pair of sandals made from sturdy leather soles, 0.5” heels and supple leather straps and insoles.  Together we will explore the sandal-making process, from cutting the straps to fitting them to your own feet. If you have ever wanted to learn how to make your own shoes, this sandal making workshop is a great introduction to the processes and tools you would use in shoemaking.

No experience is necessary, Stace will provide all the tools & supplies you’ll need. View photos of past sandal making workshops and student-made sandals HERE and read student testimonials HERE

We will reference a handful of simple sandal designs as a jumping off point for making your pair of dream sandals. You can choose to keep it simple and make a design as-is, or modify & customize your design to your heart’s content! If you are set on creating a specific design, we can usually make it happen.

Stace will bring the basic leather colors: black, espresso, caramel, and natural vegetable tanned leather, as well as an assortment of colorful leather to use for your straps, embellishments and design elements on your sandals.

At the end of the day we will sand down the edges, refining the fit and finishing your sandals.  You will be able to walk away from the workshop in your custom handmade sandals! You will also leave with an outline of the sandal making process and a list of suppliers if you’d like to continue with sandal making.

What we will make: Leather sole sandals with a 0.5” heel, a round toe, and leather uppers

Where: Make Smith, 135 E. De La Guerra Street, Santa Barbara, CA

When: Sunday May 19, 2019 from 11:00am-4:00pm (some of you may finish a little earlier or a little later).  We will take about 30 minutes for a lunch break - feel free to pack a lunch or there are options nearby for takeout.

What to bring: working hands and outfits!  We will be cutting, kneeling, bending and standing during the sandal making process so wear something comfortable.  It’s best to wear sandals as we will be getting in and out of shoes during the fitting process. We will work outside with the glue, so bring a sun hat/sunscreen if you’d like some extra protection.

Fee: $220, includes everything you need to walk away with your very own pair of handmade sandals.  All tools, leather, patterns, supplies, and materials will be provided.

If you are BIPOC and cannot afford this workshop, please email contact@stacefulwiler.com for a sliding scale ticket rate. Discounted ticket rates are limited.

Stace Fulwiler made her first pair of sandals 6 years ago and immediately was hooked on the creative freedom that comes from making her own shoes. Once she realized how teachable this craft was, she set out to share the skills she learned over years of trial and error. She never tires of seeing the joy students express when they are finished making their first pair of self-made sandals. She continues to experiment with new designs, materials, and shoemaking methods.  She teaches workshops in the warmer months throughout California. Read more about Stace HERE or @stacefulwiler
